Quick Guide to Acne-Friendly Smoothies

First off I will introduce myself! I’m Marissa Schillinger and I help women with acne get clear, glowing skin naturally! I struggled with pretty severe cystic acne in my past and am currently in the process of healing my pitted acne scarring. You can find all sorts of acne and health tips & information within my blog!

Now let’s get into this post!!

When not made the acne-friendly way, smoothies can actually worsen acne by spiking blood sugar and/or causing inflammation.

Here are 5 steps to take to make smoothies that are acne-friendly:

  1. Add protein. Adding protein to your smoothies can prevent blood sugar spikes. The best kinds of protein to add are plant-based proteins which include nuts, seeds, or plant-based protein powder.
  2. Add veggies. Adding in veggies such as leafy greens adds an extra boost of nutrients and antioxidants. Ideas of veggies you could add in include cauliflower, spinach, kale, and zucchini. Personally, I have only ever added in spinach and kale to my smoothies, but other veggies can work as well!
  3. Add healthy fats. Healthy fats are helpful in balancing hormones, and can also prevent spikes in blood sugar. Such fats include coconut milk/meat/cream and nut or seed butters.
  4. Do not add in sugar or fruit juice. Sugar and fruit juices can cause a spike in blood sugar and can lead to inflammation as well. Only use whole fruits and berries in smoothies. My personal favorites include cherries, pineapple, and bananas.
  5. Do not add in any dairy products. Dairy can lead to or worsen hormone imbalance and can also cause inflammation.

Here are the ingredients of one of my all-time favorite smoothies, which I have everyday for breakfast:

  • Canned coconut milk (get ones that have no added gums or preservatives; Trader Joe’s is a good brand as well as Thrive Market)
  • Lots of spinach
  • Frozen cherries
  • Vega plant-based protein powder (the chocolate one)
  • Water
  • Matcha powder (matcha is an antioxidant powerhouse!)

It is seriously SO GOOD!!

I hope this post was helpful!!
